Drive around Murrabit

  1. Golf Course

    This site was originally the ‘Common’ where many
    families kept a house cow for fresh milk, cream and butter.This well kept, 12 hole course is the ideal location for a relaxed round of golf.
  2. St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church

    Opened in 1961.
  3. Murrabit Shop and Tavern

    Caters for the needs of residents and visitors to the area with a take-away menu, grocery items, post office, bank agency, petrol and daily papers.A modern dining room also provides excellent meals.
  4. Station Master’s Residence

    The last remaining railway building in the town.
  5. Site of Bakery

    Built by a Mr. Graham around 1925. Bread was delivered around the district by Model T Ford.The Bakery had many owners before closing during the 1980s.
  6. War Memorial

    Commemorating those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in both the First and Second World Wars.
  7. Murrabit Public Hall

    Built in 1912 and shifted to the present site in 1924.
  8. Market Site

    From its small beginnings in 1977 when it was designed to provide an outlet for cottage crafts and produce, on the first Saturday of every month an astonishing transformation takes place on this site when approximately 300 stalls open for business at the famous Murrabit Country Market.

  11. Site of Old Railway Station and Yards

    Opened in 1924 and formally closed 37 years to the day after the opening.The railway gates were located between the existing public toilets and Lions Park.
  12. Mrs. Danson’s Boarding House and Sweet Shop

    Later became the post office. Ran mainly for workers on the railway line and Packing Shed as well as school teachers. Mrs Danson also kept a little shop from which she sold sweets and homemade ice cream.

  14. Murrabit Packing Company

    First citrus groves planted near Gonn Crossing around 1887. Packing enterprise relocated to Murrabit in 1925.The shed was built right beside the railway line so fruit and other goods could be loaded directly onto the trucks.The Murrabit Packing Company took over in 1927 and was a major employer in the district until 1995.
  15. Murrabit Bridge

    Opened in 1926, this all-steel bridge over the Murray River once carried trains into New South Wales.The final leg of the Murray River Marathon begins here each year. Located a few metres downstream from the bridge is a boat ramp.
  16. Miss M.G Keats, MBE, Picnic Area

    An excellent location to view the bridge and the river and to enjoy a picnic. Miss Keats, a local, was the second woman registered as a veterinary surgeon in Victoria after graduating from the University of Melbourne in 1923. Miss Keep’s territory covered 11,000 square miles in days when roads were poor. She was appointed Inspector of Stock for the Gonn Crossing on the Murray River; no livestock could enter Victoria without being inspected and passed. She practised from ‘Gonn’ station until the early 1930s before moving into Kerang (60 Wyndham Street) where she practiced as a vet until her death at age 75.
  17. W. McIntosh General Store and Family Grocer

    Built around 1936 and operated until the 1970s
  18. Browning’s Butcher Shop

    The butchery business was the earliest provider in
    Murrabit, first as a carving cart with flies being kept at bay by branches of gum.As health regulations became stricter the shop building was built around 1925 and operated until the 1970s.
