Guttrum and Benwell Forests
Guttrum and Benwell Forests are situated on the Murray River between Koondrook and Murrabit, downstream of Gunbower Island. The Murray River borders the northern boundaries. The forests have similar natural characteristics to Gunbower Island and become inundated when the Murray River floods.
Wandella Forest
Wandella Forest is a 900 ha Black Box Forest 6 kms west of Kerang. The Quambatook Road divides the forest and access is best off this road onto the network of dirt tracks during the dry period. Like most Black Box plant communities the forest is occasionally flooded which stimulates growth and attracts numerous water birds. It is a great place for a scenic drive and visitors will almost certainly see some interesting wildlife.
Leaghur Forest
Leaghur Forest is the largest and arguably the best Black Box forest in Victoria. Located on the Loddon
Floodplain, half way between Kerang and Boort, it covers 1680 ha and has high environmental value. Over 300 plants have been identified within the forest, the majority native. Due to the undulating or gilgai nature of the forest floor the understorey plants are very diverse and these change over time depending on seasonal rainfall and flooding. Woodland birds are present most of the time and wetland species visit during times of flooding. Access is good during dry times, via a network of dirt tracks for sight seeing or the forest is a great place to explore on bikes. There are two bush camping areas available for visitors.
